Clayton Raymond Bowen Prize
The Unitarian Universalist Christian Fellowship, founded in 1945, www.uuchristian.org, is soliciting manuscripts for the 2008 Clayton Raymond Bowen Prize in Unitarian Universalist biblical scholarship, named after the esteemed professor of New Testament at Meadville Theological School. The prize consists of a $500 cash award and publication of the essay in The Unitarian Universalist Christian Journal.
The topic of the paper should be an exegesis of a major biblical pericope, address a significant biblical issue, or consider the value of the biblical tradition for liberal religion today.
The competition is open to Unitarian Universalist seminarians and graduate students. Papers should be 10 to 20 pages, typed double-spaced, and include a bibliography. References may appear as footnotes or endnotes. Entries must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from a faculty member to ensure the student is in good standing. The author's name and school should appear on the cover page only, as the essays will be evaluated anonymously.
The submitted essays should be in publishable or near publishable form. Entries will be judged on the originality of the scholarly contribution, the relevance for contemporary Unitarian Universalist Christianity, the quality of writing and communications. The judges reserve the right not to award a prize. Four hard copies, along with an electronic version, should be submitted with faculty recommendation by May 1, 2008. No late entries will be accepted. The prize will be presented at General Assembly.
