Come Learn Together

April 10, 2025

Something For the Imagination

Institute Keynote Speaker: We are thrilled to announce that Kai Cheng Thom, writer, performer, cultural worker and speaker, will be our keynote speaker for our 2026 Institute for the Learning Ministry! Kai Cheng will also have additional roles in worship and in caucus spaces. Broadly, Kai Cheng’s work will explore love as a force for resistance and resilience. Learn more about Kai Cheng Thom here.
From Kai Cheng: “I believe that each of us is born to reshape the world.  The prophet and storyteller Octavia Butler has written that we change everything we touch, and everything we touch changes us – and every moment of my life has proven this to be true.  I am a storyteller in the lineage of change-makers, and my message is simple: we need to discover a revolutionary love. I speak this message in poetry, in song and movement, in words delivered straight from my soul.”

Julica Hermann de la FuenteSomething for the Institute

Julica Hermann de la Fuente, Lifelong Learning Manager (on behalf of the Institute Planning Team)

How do you plan a learning retreat when everything is uncertain, fascism is on the rise, and so many of us already feel exhausted?

By co-creating a space of respite, of possibility, of collective strength. By inviting the gathered community to name what they need and offer what they have.

For this upcoming Institute, the Institute Planning Team and UUMA staff are excited to invite your energy, collaboration and gifts through an application and nomination process. We don’t want to create a program in a vacuum, we want to create the container that you all will populate with your new experiments, with your love for Unitarian Universalist ministry, with your preaching skills, with your recently hard-earned lessons and favorite new tools.

Please accept this warm invitation to apply and/or nominate a colleague to lead worship or offer a learning opportunity at Institute next January! The request for proposals has more details about what we are looking for and what we can offer learning track and worship leaders. If you have more questions after visiting the link, please email Julica (or reply to this newsletter) and she will get back to you.

Something for Support

At the UUMA one of the ways we live out our what statement – because we need one another – is by striving to make our programming financially accessible. We are able to do this in part because of a strong scholarship fund. In this year with both Ministry Days and an Institute for the Learning Ministry, we are expecting additional need for scholarship funds. Our scholarship fund depends on our members to keep it strong. If you have a little extra these days please consider making a gift to our scholarship fund
