Common Ethics Panel
From Rev. Marlene Walker, UUMA Board of Trustees Trustee-At-Large Ethics and Collegiality
Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to be bringing you an update on the progress towards a Common Ethics Panel. It’s been a while, but you may recall that when we last revised our Guidelines, we were hoping to have in place a Common Ethics Panel. This work has been on going with the support of a working group made up of representatives of all the professional organizations and the UUA’s Office of Ministries and Faith Development, working towards the creation of a common ethics code and a common process of accountability amongst all religious professionals. Last month we held the second two-day retreat of representatives from each organization. The UUMA was represented by Melissa Carvill Ziemer (Director of Ministries for Collegial Care), Leslie Takahashi (President, UUMA Board of Trustees), and myself.
We have now completed a first draft of a common ethics code that is drawn from the codes of all the organizations and has been reviewed by the leadership of each organization. In that process we found that we already had much in common in each of our codes and going forward each organization will have a supplement with material specific to its membership. Our next step is to create a common accountability process, grounded in restorative practices. We will share details of the ongoing work as they are available.
As the at large board member with the portfolio for collegiality and ethics I am excited about this work and its potential. As we work with our colleagues from different professional organizations to create a common understanding of ethics and accountability, I believe we will strengthen our own ministries, because we need one another, across all our religious professional organizations.

UUMA MFC Appointments
The UUMA has four representatives on the Ministerial Fellowship Committee and is seeking applications to fill two open positions. UUMA representatives to the MFC must be approved by the UUA Board of Trustees and serve as full members of the MFC. The UUMA Board of Trustees receives reports from our MFC representatives and occasionally asks our representatives to present ideas or requests to the MFC on behalf of the UUMA.
You can find more information and link to the application here. Please apply by March 10, 2023. The Executive Team will receive applications and forward a list of candidates to the Board for review and selection

Continuing Education Standards Focus Groups
In 2019, the UUMA published Continuing Education Standards along with the ability for members to log their hours of continuing education completed. Now that we have more than three years of experience with the Standards, it is time to assess. Specifically, how well do the Standards and recording platform meet the needs of the UUMA membership? The first stage of this assessment is focus groups – two with those actively using the system and two with those who have not or found the system challenging. For more information and to register, click the date below. If the groups are full, email Darrick at jackson@uuma.org and if there is enough interest, we will add another group.
