Something for the Journey
From Rev. Michelle Favreault, MFN Program Manager
It seems to me that there are teachers in ministry, and there are TEACHERS in ministry. What I want to say is that I’ve learned from so many teachers in classes, workshops, from students, and at events of all sorts when a conversation, a sermon, a lecture or lesson plan brought new information, insight or ideas to my mind and heart. Then, there are the TEACHERS I’ve encountered. A few extraordinary, inspirational models and mentors who didn’t just “add” to a base of knowledge, but who changed my life on – dare I say – a sacramental level. A cellular level. That because I knew them, I was changed…for good. Over the decades, I mentioned this to Yielbonzie more than once. A mentor, colleague, teacher who I could never thank enough in life, and who I celebrate these recent days since his arrival to the realm of the ancestors. My gratitude for his presence was never accounted for with a letter grade, a checklist of accomplishments, or a competency worksheet. It was relationship, remembrance and calling – often sung, sometimes with words.
As we move towards Ministry Days and all of the June energies of looking forward and looking back are particularly intense, I want to encourage you to share prayers and gratitude as a gift to your teachers and TEACHERS. And I encourage you to think about the gifts you have to offer to the colleagues you don’t yet know. The patience, presence, practical, and philosophical lessons that your life and love might offer to someone who needs what you have. Through the Ministerial Formation Network, we’re always looking to connect experienced vocational advisors to newer colleagues in formation. You never know who you will change for the good. Log onto your UUMA account and add your gifts to the Mentor Database. The things you TEACH with your life just might matter so much more than words can ever say.
