Something For the Journey
From Janette Lallier, Director of Operations

“It’s all about the chairs!” One of my former choral directors would chant this phrase weekly as we departed the choir loft. And even with the attention to details and the best of plans, inevitably a service or performance would come when the choir took their positions and one lone singer was left standing while their colleagues took their seats.  And as someone in the back row snuck out to get an extra seat, the rest of us would sigh, nod and mutter softly “it IS all about the chairs”.

It feels that in recent times the ‘chairs’ of life – all those details, dates, and opportunities – have become harder and harder to track.  When folks miss the information and notices that will keep them plugged in it is easy to feel left out! Here at the UUMA we are always asking how we can improve our communications. One small shift that we are implementing with this week’s news is to shift how we present our information.  In the first block you will now find those news items that are imminent. Things you may have seen in the past but put off as it seemed far away.  In this second block we hope to share some words of inspiration, comfort, or resource, intended to benefit and sustain your ministry. The final block will be something extra… for when you have a minute to read to the end of the email. Here we will share upcoming events, opportunities and announcements.

We hope this new format helps you keep track of the details and, as always, we look forward to your feedback as to how we can do better (and things that work well!).

In the spirit of helping you keep track of the chairs I wanted to remind those of you who supervise staff that today, March 3, 2023 is Staff Appreciation Day.  If the time got away from you, this Church Staffing Support Site reminds us of the importance of taking the time to stop what you are doing and say thank you and let your staff know, individually, how their efforts are a valuable contribution to the mission!  For more tips click here.

Something Extra

Scholarship Announcement: Do you know a lay leader in Unitarian Universalism who will be entering their first year of seminary in 2023, or is undertaking undergraduate work to prepare for seminary?

Each year the Rev. Chuck and Nancy Thomas Scholarship supports a student in the first year of seminary or in preparatory academic work for seminary training.  The UUA’s Thomas Scholarship was founded in 1998 to honor Rev. Chuck Thomas’s career in the Unitarian Universalist ministry and his family’s long-standing commitment to lay leadership. Thomas Scholars qualify for this award by demonstrating their outstanding commitment to Unitarian Universalism as lay leaders.

For more information and to find the application for this scholarship and other ministerial scholarships available from the UUA, please visit: https://www.uua.org/careers/ministers/becoming/scholarships.  Applications open on February 15 and must be submitted no later than April 14, 2023.

Pandemic Survey Information: Congregations in the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), are being asked to participate in a national study of religious life in America. It is the seventh such survey in the Faith Communities Today (FACT) series, begun in the year 2000, which provides religious leaders of all traditions critical information about the changing nature of congregational life and how to respond effectively. Information and findings from the FACT surveys are provided online freely at www.faithcommunitiestoday.org. Congregational ministers and leaders should have received the link to this survey on March 1. Congregational ministers should coordinate and submit one survey per congregation. Findings will be publicly available.

Ministry Days 2023 Registration Opens Monday, March 6
