Something for the Journey
from Darrick Jackson, Director of Ministries for Lifelong Learning

Last week, Michelle Favreault mentioned that at MFN retreats, she asks participants to share a “song of comfort or inspiration.” Darrick Jackson, Director of Ministries for Lifelong LearningLately, for me that has been the song “Little Blue” by Jacob Collier. This song is a prayer. I first heard it a couple of months ago, and it has stayed with me, particularly in these conflicted times. The song is about a person calling out to Little Blue (who I could describe as God, Goddess, Spirit of Life, Love, etc.)  as a source of comfort, “Little Blue, be my shelter, be my cradle, be my womb.”

Little Blue responds in the chorus, “You’re going to find a way to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders.” Listening to that chorus continuously brings up deep emotions within me. I am awash with the feelings of being loved, held, and cared for and reminded that I am enough. When the world is in chaos, when there is so much to do, it is helpful to have that reminder that you are enough, you’re not alone, that someone is holding you and believing in you.

This is why I am a member of the UUMA. In those moments of struggle, I know that I have colleagues surrounding me. People with whom I can share my burdens and help bring me back to my call. Ministry can be challenging. We need one another to sustain this work. As staff of the UUMA, we work hard to create opportunities for support for all UU ministers and those in formation. We hope to be your “Little Blue” when you need us.
